During his PhD studies in the School of the Built Environment of the University of Nottingham, he worked teaching there and at Nottingham Trent University. He offers his contribution based on professional and academic experiences, merging mature teaching, innovative research and contemporary practice aiming to educate with a holistic approach.
His teaching career comprises 10 years in Mexico and the UK. He coursed studies on Didactics during his Masters in the National University of Mexico. The PhD completed his pedagogical approach with training from the Graduate School and of the Staff & Educational Development Unit at the University of Nottingham. He coordinated the Workshop of Phenomenological Research, for the module of Research Methods leaded by Dr Stephen Platt, with stimulant results. Although his focus has been theoretical, he relates Theory and Design Studio facing contemporary reflection with practical problems.
Fidel’s research interests include architectural theory and practice; philosophy, especially phenomenology of art; heritage conservation; and identity and memory issues. His research approaches architecture from philosophy; his PhD thesis and present investigations develop a phenomenological account as a critique of modern architectural conservation. He has presented papers at international level and he has a book with his experience published about interdisciplinary research. He was Research Assistant in the Centre for Research in Architectural Culture, under the leadership of Dr Jonathan Hale.
Regarding practice, he worked in Mexico and Italy on diverse projects, from private housing to fashion malls, having a leading role since the conceptual and detailing stages up to site supervision. He was Project Manager in Good-Year-Coronado Company in Mexico, developing projects of architecture and design. In 1992-93 he worked in Novara, Italy, in the Studio G-1, participating in commercial, residential and urban projects; he did work surveying and drawing for Novaria Restauri Restoration Workshop. In Mexico he founded his own firm working on commercial, residential, education and corporative projects. In 1998-2004, he worked for Interdiseños SA de CV, participating in the design and development of important commercial projects in Mexico and Central America.
Fidel graduated as architect from Anahuac University in Mexico City in 1991 where later on he was invited to teach. He obtained the Masters in Architecture, Restoration of Sites and Monuments, in the National University of Mexico, having as thesis the project of conservation of the “Hospital de Jesús”. In 2004 he was granted with CONACYT and SEP scholarships to do PhD studies.
